Nurses work in interprofessional teams to provide health care to patients and families. Differences in how health care professionals collaborate and communicate may lead to medical errors or sub-optimal patient care. Learning how to effectively collaborate and communicate in interprofessional teams is essential to provide optimal patient care.
Directions:
View the Johnson & Johnson podcast entitled, “What Ebola Taught Us About Collaboration and Communication.” You may access the podcasts (https://nursing.jnj.com/see-you-now-podcast/rebroadcast-what-ebola-taught-us-about-collaboration-and-communication) here (https://nursing.jnj.com/see-you-now-podcast) or through Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Reflect on your experiences working with members of the Interprofessional team as a Registered Nurse or as a Nursing Student. If you do not have experience working in a health care environment, you may discuss another example of working in a team environment.
Write a paper that is 2 – 3 pages in length (excluding the student title page and reference list).
The paper should address the following elements:
Write 1 – 2 paragraphs describing an example of a misunderstanding or negative experience you had communicating with another discipline/provider in your practice as a Registered Nurse or as a Nursing Student. (i.e. physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, etc.)
Write 1 – 2 paragraphs discussing how differences in the background (such as educational training, the perspective of the patient, experience, or other factors) between you and the other person played a role in the misunderstanding.
Write 1 – 2 paragraphs discussing what you could have done differently in the situation. How could the guiding principles identified by the podcast (flattening the hierarchy, valuing the importance of every team member, creating a no-blame environment within the team, creating a safe care environment, ownership of care environment, and communication within the team) be applied to this situation?
Write 1 – 2 paragraphs describing how you will apply what you’ve learned in this module to your current or future nursing practice.
Include an introductory paragraph.
Support your ideas with evidence from the module learning materials or other references.
Follow APA Style Requirements for Writing Style, Mechanics of Style, Headings (Level 1), Margins (1 inch), Font (11 or 12), Line Spacing (double spaced), In-text citations, Student Title Page, and a Reference List.
Submit the assignment as a word document or a pdf.

Module 6: Learning Activities
As you reflect upon the learning activities for this module, think about your own experiences in health care, whether it is as a student or RN, and consider how reliant the patient was on having their care team work together collaboratively.
Ponder these questions:
Golom & Schreck (2018) explored how systems, organizations, and educational programs limit or enhance interprofessional collaboration and communication.
What other barriers do you see to the ideal image of what interprofessional practice should look like?
How can you intentionally try to improve working on an interprofessional team?
George & Quatrara (2018) examine the effects of an hour-long interprofessional simulation training to increase knowledge and teamwork skills.
Does your current place of employment have any interprofessional training?
Can you identify areas in your practice where this could be implemented?
Did you have any formal interprofessional education in nursing school? Were there any clinical interprofessional experiences? Think of interprofessional collaboration that you do now at your current position. How could this be improved?
