Double Indemnity–Discussion (Krutnik Part 2)
First of all, make sure you watch the FILM NOIR Wrap-Up Video!
Then, go online and watch the pretty wonderful Double Indemnity, release in 1944 and directed by Billy Wilder, an Austrian-born director who lived in Germany and moved to Hollywood after the Nazi takeover in the early 1930s. The film is available in many sites online.
USING OUR DISCUSSION OF FILM NOIR based on Krutnik’s essay, write a post talking about how this film fits within this genre–specifically the visual representation of the CITY as NOIR in the film, and the way the characters as ‘urbanites’ and how they USE the CITY and LIVE in it. Think about the notion of a ‘home’ in noir, the archetype of the femme fatale, the look of city in noir. You don’t have to do all of those–they’re just possibilities.
In this discussion, I want you to use specific scenes from the film to substantiate your arguments!
– As usual, ONE post, two replies.
