Now it is time for you to write your own suspense story. Your story must contain 1) dark, ominous settings, 2) supernatural elements 3) intense emotions of gothic literature. Please remember that I do not want to receive “slasher horror” stories. That is a different genre. Think of the difference between a suspense story or movie and a horror movie. For example, you might consider the difference between a suspenseful movie like The Sixth Sense versus Saw or the movies by Alfred Hitchcock versus movies like Friday the 13th, or Nightmare on Elm Street (none of which I’ve seen for several reasons. Be smart and remember your audience. If your story is so graphic I can’t even get through it, it’s going to be hard for me to give you a high score).
You will be graded using the narrative grading rubric. Remember that I will be looking for all of the elements of fiction in your story. You must have a well-developed plot and rich characters that are described using both direct and indirect characterization.
Follow the guidelines below:
As mentioned above, your story must contain 1) dark, ominous settings, 2) supernatural elements 3) intense emotions of gothic literature.
Include 1–2 paragraphs after your story that clearly identify each of these elements and how they were used both in gothic literature and in your story.
Include direct dialogue between characters that is written and formatted correctly.
Use strong word choice and literary devices to describe the setting, characters, and other elements of your story.
It is difficult to put a length requirement on a short story; however, please note that your story must be long enough to allow you to fully develop your plot and characters.
