Assignment – We have looked at philosophy, religion, and science as a source of knowledge. In philosophy, knowledge comes from critical inquiry into ultimate questions. In religion, knowledge comes from faith, revelation, sacred scripture, and authority. In science, knowledge comes from creating a hypothesis and testing it with empirical data. Write three brief paragraphs on the following three questions. There are no right or wrong answers; the object is to see if you have thought about the material we covered.
1. Tertullian wrote that one cannot be a philosopher and a religious believer. Anselm wrote that one can accept both. With whom do you agree? Can someone be both a religious believer and a philosopher? Why or why not?
2. Can someone be both a philosopher and a scientist? Does philosophy attempt to answer questions beyond the realm of science? Or are some scientists right who say that you cannot learn about the world by sitting and thinking, but only by experiment?
3. Can someone be both a religious believer and a scientist? Is there a conflict between religion and science?
150 words altogether. Spelling and grammar count. Submit your answer. The assignment is worth 10% of your grade.
